I have tried different approaches over the years, and this is the routine I personally return to because I am happy with how my skin looks and feels. It is not about using six products simply for the sake of having more steps. Each layer has a specific job, and the order helps me move from cleansing to hydration, targeted care, and finally moisture retention.
My six-step routine at a glance
- Cleanse: remove makeup, sunscreen, oil, and daily buildup gently.
- Prepare: add a light first layer of hydration.
- Hydrate: help the skin attract and hold water.
- Treat: use peptides for smoother, firmer-looking skin.
- Moisturize: soften the skin and add a richer comfort layer.
- Seal: use a small amount of facial oil to reduce moisture loss.
Step 1: Cleanse gently
I begin in the evening with the Gentle Daily Cleanser. Cleansing removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, and everything that has settled on the skin during the day. The important word for me is gently. I do not want my face to feel squeaky, tight, or stripped after washing.
If you already have a gentle cleanser that your skin likes, keep using it. The role matters more than forcing one specific product into every routine. I use lukewarm water, massage with my fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and pat rather than rub with a towel.
Step 2: Prepare with a facial mist
Next I use The Pure Ultimate Face Mist. This gives my freshly cleansed skin a light first layer of hydration and leaves it slightly damp for the products that follow. I also like that the formula is designed to support a balanced skin microbiome, the community of microorganisms that naturally lives on the skin surface.
A facial mist is not a replacement for moisturizer. On its own, water can evaporate and leave dry skin feeling tight again. I treat the mist as a preparation step and follow it promptly with my hydrating layers.
Step 3: Build hydration with hyaluronic acid
While my skin is still lightly damp, I apply Pure Double Hydration Boost Gel + HA. HA stands for hyaluronic acid, a humectant that helps attract and hold water in the upper layers of the skin. This is the stage where the routine begins to feel replenishing rather than simply fresh.
Hyaluronic acid works as part of a complete routine. I do not leave it as the final layer, especially in a dry environment. The cream and oil that come later help slow evaporation and keep the hydration step feeling comfortable for longer.
Step 4: Add targeted peptide support
My targeted step is Pure Peptide Anti-Aging Serum. I use it to support firmer, smoother-looking skin and to address visible concerns such as fine lines and loss of bounce. Peptides are short chains of amino acids commonly used in healthy-aging formulas.
I apply a small amount and give it a moment to settle. More serum does not create faster results. A consistent, comfortable amount is easier to use night after night and less likely to leave the next layers feeling heavy.
Step 5: Moisturize
I follow with Pure Anti-Aging Day Cream. This gives my skin a richer layer of moisture and helps it feel soft and comfortable. Hydration is not only about adding water. Dry, changing skin also benefits from emollient and barrier-supporting ingredients that improve softness and reduce that dry, tight feeling.
I spread a small amount over my face and neck without pulling at the skin. If the weather is humid, I may need less. During colder or drier weeks, I may use a little more on the areas that feel depleted.
Step 6: Seal with facial oil
The final step is Pure Nourishing Facial Oil. For me, this is what completes the routine. The oil adds nourishment and helps seal in the layers underneath, fitting my focus on supporting the skin barrier rather than constantly exfoliating it.
I use only two or three drops. I warm them between my fingertips and gently press the oil into the skin, beginning around the eye area and above the lips before moving across the rest of my face. The slip lets me make small massage movements without dragging. I do not want my face coated in oil; a thin, even layer is enough.
Overnight, the oil gradually settles into the routine. By morning, my skin feels soft and smooth without the need for another full cleanse.
My simpler morning routine
My morning routine is intentionally shorter. I usually cleanse once a day in the evening, so in the morning I do not automatically wash again. Skin needs differ, but this approach helps me avoid the tight feeling I used to get from cleansing morning and night.
- Apply The Pure Ultimate Face Mist.
- Use a small amount of Pure Double Hydration Boost Gel + HA while the skin is slightly damp.
- Apply a light layer of Pure Anti-Aging Day Cream.
- Finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen before daylight exposure.
Sunscreen is essential to the daytime version of this routine. Hydration and peptides cannot compensate for unprotected ultraviolet exposure, especially when the goal is to support more even-looking tone, texture, and firmness over time.
How to decide whether six steps are right for you
This is my ultimate routine, not a rule that every person needs six products. If your skin feels congested, sticky, or irritated, simplify. Start with cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen, then introduce one optional layer at a time. A routine earns its place by improving comfort and being realistic enough to repeat.
- Patch test unfamiliar products.
- Use smaller amounts before removing an entire step.
- Adjust cream and oil by season.
- Pause exfoliants or retinoids if the skin becomes persistently red, burning, or flaky.
- Seek professional guidance for swelling, severe rash, pain, or symptoms that do not settle.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to wait between every layer?
No long waiting period is required. I give each product enough time to spread and settle so the next layer does not pill, usually a few seconds.
Can I use facial oil around the eyes?
I keep a small amount around the orbital area and away from the lash line. Anyone prone to milia or eye irritation may prefer to avoid this area.
Is this routine only for women over 50?
No. The framework can suit anyone who prefers a hydration-first routine, although the texture and number of layers should reflect individual skin needs.
Bottom line
My ultimate routine at 54 works in a deliberate sequence: cleanse, prepare, hydrate, treat, moisturize, and seal. The value is not the number of bottles. It is giving each layer a clear purpose and keeping the routine gentle enough to use consistently.
